A number of Hawks took on the formidable challenge of the marathon distance at the weekend with runners competing in London, Hamburg and Blackpool. Don Lyndsay celebrated his 70th year by completing the Blackpool course in a time of 4:42:39 to claim 3rd v70. Over in Hamburg only one of the travelling four toed the line in a healthy condition. Kenny Liddell completed the course in an excellent time of 2:56:11 to lead the guys home. He was followed by Munro Stewart who “bravely” finished in 3:17:10 despite being unwell just prior to the race. Final finisher was Chris Walsh who smiled his way round the course in a time of 3:27:39 as a training run for his Island Peaks challenge. Bruce Scott took on the mantle of club cheerleader as a result of injury.
The largest contingent of Hawks was reserved for the London Marathon. There were eight runners who took part on a warm and sunny day in a race that doubled as the British and Scottish Marathon Championships. Taking up the places awarded by the club were Suzzie Swan (4:27:13) and Catherine Matthews (3:57:47). This was also Catherine’s marathon debut!! Angus Donald followed Catherine home in a time of 3:58:29 with Gareth Irons slightly ahead of both in 3:55:59 after a trip to the medical tent at mile 22. Gemma Dolan was next home in a time of 4:01:07. There were big marathon distance PB’s also for Scott Dyer (2:55:45), Gary Bruce (2:44:41) and Billy Gibson (2:40:21).
Well done everyone and enjoy a well deserved rest!!!
